Session 1: Introduction to the six value clusters

Social systems vs individual orientated systems

In this Session you will be introduced to the six key value clusters and each one will be given a convenient title. The clusters tend to be “social” systems whereby people sacrifice elements of themselves for the benefit of the “group”. Here people act on the basis of group values/norms. As people become “frustrated” by a social existence they break out into an individual orientated system. Here the person will focus on their own needs and drives.

You can see that people develop by moving from social to individual onto another social system and so on. There is no guarantee that people will continue to develop through all the values. They may stop at a certain point. Also a person may have elements of several value systems. The dominant system will account for a person’s thoughts, feelings and decisions.

Click the images below and work through each of the six clusters. As you do, take time to pause and think about each cluster. Ask yourself if the description applies to you. You may think about other people, groups or teams that fit the description.

For each cluster you will be given an “inside view” of how the system operates. You will discover how this type of person sees the world and the strengths and weaknesses involved with thinking this way.
